Unlike a national or a franchise our images are our own work and not stock images copied from another site
As with anything it depends on the quality of the product you buy, who is selling the product and in many cases the brand that sits behind the shutter manufacture.
If you have done your research on-line you are probably a little confused by now. Should you buy vinyl shutters, MDF shutters, hybrid shutters or wooden shutters or any of the other offerings that are out there?
Once you have a company come out to you things will probably not become any clearer because in many cases the franchises and nationals can only promote the product from the factory they either own or partner with. Luckily, we are an independent and don’t have that issue. So now, they will probably try and promote their product and tell you how great/bad MDF is depending on which company has come to see you or tell you that their product has a 25 year warranty.
Many shutters come from the same factory and are just re-branded – so for example the product sold by the likes of Hillary’s and the franchises come from the same factory. Depending on the value they put on their own brand they will charge you as they consider fit. By the way, at The Great Wood Shutter Co. we also have access to the same product, so are always happy to price match should we need to (in general we are cheaper) and give you a truly local and independent service.
In general, you should be paying around £250 to £400 per square meter depending on the product. This should include VAT and fitting. We believe we offer a really great all wood product at amazing prices. Why not ask us for a quote.
This is probably not the place to go through all the different shutters styles because the options are so great but in general shutters for regular windows fall under three types:
Full height – a shutter that spans the full height of the window. Normally this would have a divider rail or split that allows the bottom and top louvers to be controlled independently to maximise control over privacy and light. Click here to link to a project that has full height shutters.
Tier on Tier – these again span the full height of the window but are split into 2 separate shutters sets top and bottom than can be individually opened. Best suited to tall windows – click here to see a project that show tier on tier shutters.
Café style – these shutters normally cover half or 2/3rds of the window leaving the top of the window totally exposed. Can be a good solution but can also look messy if dressed with a different window dressing above.
For bifold doors, French doors and special shapes there is a huge variety of ways they can be treated. The fact that wooden shutters can be carved and shaped means nearly every type of window can be covered. Want some inspiration ? click this link.
The simple answer is no. If you want blackout you need a specialist blind or shutter. This, though, is the same for most types of window coverings. Let’s say you choose a blackout roller you still have light leakage around the side of the roller.
With a shutter there is no leakage around the edges as the frames are fixed to sides of the window reveals. You get a glow between the slats rather than direct sunlight. We fit a lot of shutters in bedrooms and in 99.9% of cases they are sufficient.
However, we recognise that if you work during the night, are light sensitive or have a young child then a specialist solution may be needed. There is no need to worry as we have specialist shutters with an integrated blackout blind. These really are about as good as you can get! Click here to see more about blackout shutters.
1. Privacy
Unlike other window coverings which are either up or down (think Romans and Rollers) or have to be drawn (think curtains and vertical blinds) or where all the slats have to be angled at the same degree (think venetians) shutters provide the greatest versatility of any window covering. The fact that each shutter panel has louvers which can be individually operated, and can also be split so that the top and bottom section of the louvers can be independently controlled, means that you can control privacy to a high degree.
2. Light Control
As we all know the sun does not sit still and as light moves around our home being able to control the amount of light we let in can really help set the ambience and also control heat levels. The ability to control louvers and panels as mentioned above is also fantastic in being able to shade parts of a room. So, if you have a wall mounted TV you may just want to shade that part of the room but still keep the view on to the garden and shutters allow you to do this.
3. Hypo-allergenic Properties
Curtains and romans and other fabric blinds can harbour dust, mites and other allergens and on top of that they are a real problem to clean. By the way – when did you last clean your curtains. Shutters are very simple to look after. Simply dust – and of course the slats don’t move like they do on venetians – or a simple wipe with a cloth with some warm soapy water.
4. Insulation and Soundproofing
A couple of studies in the market place have analysed the insulating properties of window coverings and shutters came out top. So, if you have leaky windows or maybe your property is on the main road then shutters are a great solution.
5. Timeless
Our wooden window shutters really suit any type of home – why not have a look at the inspiration section of the website where you can see whole home projects we have carried out. Shutters are simply and timeless and also add value to the home.
We will of course suggest that you use us if you are looking to have the shutters installed by professionals. If you are looking to buy and install yourself we will be happy to quote supply only. Just note our prices will be higher than those you find online because the shutters you find on the online sites are not of great quality. We know because we have re-installed these for customers where they have come to us for a little help. Whatever you do don’t try bays, tracks and special shapes yourself.
So – if you are looking for a professional company to install shutters how do you know whom to use? If you look at a national then you really have no idea of who will install those shutters for you and what their portfolio of works is like. The same for franchises – just search different areas in the country and you will see the same images time and time again. Now they can’t all have installed those same shutters can they! All the images on our site are images of our installs and all the reviews are our reviews and not a franchisee or fitter in Glasgow.
